As much as we would love for our skincare products to give us overnight results, that’s unfortunately not how all skincare works. Often being consistent over a period of weeks is the norm when expecting results from your skincare.

Sure there are some products that can give you instant results. For example, blemish patches only take about 6 to 8 hours to work. You can even see the patch working as it starts to turn white from the gunk it's absorbing from a pimple.

But, again this is not typical for your skincare. And when it comes to preventative skincare, like adding Retinol during your late 20’s, you won’t exactly see immediate results but rather diminish the chance of signs of aging from appearing in the first place.

A lot of the time skincare involves consistency and patience. You can’t exactly use a product like an exfoliant for just a week and expect it to transform your skin right away.

So how long does it take for certain skincare to show results?

When to expect results

Different skincare products contain certain key ingredients to help achieve the claims stated on the packaging. For example, wrinkle-targeting products typically contain ingredients like Vitamin C and Retinol with claims that they help improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The key ingredients in a formula help determine how long it will take to see a difference in your skin.

Retinol

Retinol does quite a lot of heavy lifting in your skincare. It can help manage a variety of concerns including acne, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.

While there are skincare products with varying levels of Retinol, often depending on skin type with sensitive skin formulas containing smaller concentrations, you can expect to see a change in the look of the skin within 6 months.

But, it is also totally possible to see results even sooner than those 6 months. Retinol also benefits skin texture and reduces breakouts since it helps promote cell turnover. So you may notice a smoother texture (including improvement in the look of wrinkles), and less breakouts as soon as 3 months.

Salicylic Acid

This ingredient is often used in acne treatments for its ability to help diminish excess oil in the skin that can lead to breakouts. It works by dissolving the gunk trapped inside pores that would otherwise lead to pimples and/or blackheads. And, since Salicylic Acid exfoliates the skin to remove pore-clogging debris, then you can also expect this ingredient to help improve the look of clogged pores.

Similar to Retinol, Salicylic Acid comes in a variety of concentrations with a maximum amount of 2%. Lower concentrations are typically meant to help gently exfoliate sensitive skin types.

On average it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to see results from a Salicylic Acid product. After 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use, you start to notice fewer breakouts, improved texture, and clearer-looking pores.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide pops up in quite a few different products. It is a triple-threat type of ingredient in which it helps with a variety of skin concerns. You can find it in a barrier repair product, dark spot treatment, and even in a pore-targeting serum.

This super star ingredient is known to have moisturizing effects to help replenish the skin barrier, brightening effects to help improve the look of uneven skin tone, and pore-minimizing effects by helping to balance oil production.

When it comes to dark spots and clogged pores, it may take at least 8 weeks to notice an improvement. But, it is also possible to start to see some improvements in these types of skin concerns sooner than 8 weeks. For instance, while you may not see dark spots disappear before those 8 weeks you may start to notice them gradually fade before then.

Tranexamic Acid

Another dark spot-targeting ingredient is Tranexamic Acid. You may have seen it as the star ingredient in hyperpigmentation serums or paired up with other brightening ingredients for that 1,2 punch of brightening power.

Tranexamic Acid takes about 12 weeks to yield visible results. Similar to Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid may show improvement in the skin before you hit that 12 week mark. You could start to see post-blemish marks begin to fade a little before weeks of consistent use.

For example, the Hanhoo Post-Blemish Corrector combines 3% Niacinamide and 2% Tranexamic Acid to help target post-blemish marks. This includes both dark spots and red spots that may stay behind after a pimple has healed. In our internal study, we found that you can start to see dark spots fade in pigmentation and red spots lessen in redness in as little as 2 weeks:

Hyaluronic Acid

You can find Hyaluronic Acid in a wide variety of skincare products that include hydrating and anti-aging products. This ingredient is well known for its hydrating, smoothing, and barrier-boosting properties.

When it comes to hydrating the skin, Hyaluronic Acid can almost immediately yield results. After just one use of a serum or moisturizer with this ingredient can help adequately hydrate the skin since Hyaluronic Acid attracts and holds onto water in the skin.

But, if you are looking for improvements in the look of fine lines and wrinkles, it may take at least 8 weeks to start to see visible results. The hydrating power of Hyaluronic Acid helps improve the elasticity of the skin which is responsible for the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. So in its ability to support the elasticity of the skin, Hyaluronic Acid helps the skin appear plumper and diminishes the depth of wrinkles.

Lastly…

As we’ve established some skincare ingredients can take quite a while to yield results, but it also highly depends on your own habits. If you are good about using a skincare product consistently (as directed on the packaging) then you can expect to see visible results. But, if you forget every now and then to use the product then you probably won’t see visible results as expected. Consistency is key when it comes to your routine.
