Skincare is all about consistency. You have to stick to a routine, whether that means exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week, or applying a serum daily. Expecting results immediately, even only a week into using a new product is not very realistic.
Sure, there are some products that can yield quick results but it's typically only because they are designed that way. One such product being our Blemish Patch. If you spot a whitehead, you simply apply the patch and wait 6 to 8 hours (which is pretty quick in the skincare world) and watch as the patch turns white. The white on the patch is the gunk it has collected from a pimple. So, once you’ve removed the patch the spot is visibly flatter.
While we would all love immediate results from every skincare product we use, it’s just not possible. And this is usually backed up by clinical testing. For example, in this study, Niacinamide was tested on patients with melasma for a period of 8 weeks. While the best visible results were recorded at the 8 week mark, noticeable results were still recorded at around 4 weeks of use.
So it is definitely possible to see results before a month of use of certain products but regular use is key in order to get the best results.
However, the timeframe of expected results is not the same for all skincare ingredients. While it may take between 4 and 8 weeks to see results for a Niacinamide product, you can’t expect the same timeframe for all other skincare ingredients.
Here is a quick rundown of some of the more common skincare ingredients and how long it will take for them to work:
Niacinamide
Niacinamide has a couple of different functions. It helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, balances oil production to help improve the look of pores, restores the skin barrier, and helps smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
As mentioned previously, Niacinamide helps improve the look of dark spots within a 4 to 8 week time period. But, for fine lines and wrinkles, Niacinamide was recorded to show results after 12 weeks of use.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid is in almost every acne-related product for its ability to help reduce sebum, unclog pores, minimize acne breakouts, and improves skin texture. There are whole collections of cleansers, spot treatments, serums, and creams with this ingredient to help get acne under control.
Typically when it comes to benefits like smoothing the skin, you can see results from using a Salicylic Acid product as soon as 2 to 3 weeks. But, if you want to see meaningful results when it comes to acne, then you’ll have to wait 2 to 3 months to see a noticeable difference.
Ceramides
Ceramides are known for their effectiveness in helping to repair the skin barrier. It also helps improve skin hydration and reduces the look of redness and irritation. You’ll usually see this ingredient highlighted in skin barrier and reparative products.
If you have tight, dry skin and you apply a Ceramide cream, then you will notice immediate results in improved hydration in the skin. But, when it comes to repairing the barrier or calming irritation, that may take a little longer to see results. For a weakened barrier, it can take up to 4 weeks to notice a difference in your skin.
Tranexamic Acid
Similar to Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid is well known to help with hyperpigmentation. It also helps reduce inflammation and minimizes the look of redness and uneven skin tone.
According to this study, after a period of 8 weeks, a 2% Tranexamic Acid serum helped improve skin tone, dark spots, and redness.
The Hanhoo Post-Blemish Corrector combines 3% Niacinamide and 2% Tranexamic Acid to help target the lingering spots left behind after a blemish has healed. This includes dark spots that often appear on darker skin tones and red spots that pop up more frequently on lighter skin tones.
Retinol
Known as a superstar ingredient, Retinol has a multitude of benefits. It helps reduce breakouts, smooths fine lines and texture, helps even skin tone, and boosts cell turnover. It targets a variety of concerns from acne to aging and even hyperpigmentation.
If treating fine lines and wrinkles, you can expect to see an improvement in their appearance in about 12 weeks of usage. But, you can see results sooner when it comes to acne. The use of Retinol to treat acne can produce visible results within 4 to 6 weeks of use.
Hyaluronic Acid
As a widely known skincare ingredient, Hyaluronic Acid is typically associated as the gold standard for hydrating, but it has a couple of other less known benefits. Hyaluronic Acid can help smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles, improves firmness, and supports the moisture barrier.
Almost immediately after using a skincare product with Hyaluronic Acid you will notice an increase in hydration in the skin. But, when it comes to signs of aging, you would have to wait at least 8 weeks before seeing any visible changes to the skin.
Lastly…
While there are some ingredients that can yield immediate results, for the most part, it takes weeks to months of consistent use to get the best results. So if you are discouraged after only a month of use of a new skincare product, remember that it may take a few months to really see the benefits of regular use.
